Gaiwan tea services can be used for any tea, but particularly preferred for teas with more delicate flavors.
The lid serves to contain the volatile oils/heat while the tea is steeping, and as a strainer when the tea is transferred into the cups.
Also preferred by puer connoisseurs for the ease of multiple steeps.
Tea has been consumed with a gaiwan set since the mid 1400's. Hand-made by local potter Hona Leigh Knudsen, porcelain with a lovely clear glaze. Hona Leigh's other work can be found at honaleightceramics.com.
